May Birthstone: Ethereal Emerald

Emerald gems

“The most abundant hue in nature, the human eye sees more green than any other colour in the spectrum,” says Leatrice Eiseman of the Pantone Colour Institute. “It brings a sense of clarity, renewal, and rejuvenation, which is so important in today's complex world.”

Emeralds are a symbol of rebirth and new growth - a fitting association to the season of Spring being in full bloom. These lush hues of green gems are the birthstone for May and has been beloved for millennia.

The word “Emerald” comes from the ancient Greek word for ‘green gem’, smaragdos. The Roman historian Pliny the Elder described the colour of an emerald in his Natural History as, “nothing greens greener”.

Also referred to as the “jewel of the kings,” for Egyptian pharaohs to Inca emperors have been enchanted with emeralds through the centuries. Even Cleopatra used it in her royal adornments, gave them as gifts to dignitaries, and adorned her palace with emeralds. During her reign, Cleopatra also laid claim to all the emerald mines in Egypt.

According to legend, its biggest stone — now dubbed the Atahualpa emerald — was seized from the final Inca emperor, Atahualpa, by conquistador Francisco Pizarro. The emerald and gold treasures salvaged from the sunken 17th-century Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha represent a minor portion of the colonial wealth dispatched to Spain from the New World.

It was once believed that if one placed an emerald under your tongue, one could see the future. Others believed that it made one an eloquent speaker, or exposed lovers who made false promises.

The green hue is also linked to fortune, alongside the heart chakra, further enhancing the stone's association with affection. Its connection with Venus also renders the emerald excellent for aligning with Earth energy, sensuality, and passion.
