In the thirty-five years leading up to the Christie’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels Sale in May 2014, only five Vivid Blue diamonds over 10-carats had ever been sold at auction, so it was fitting that one of the largest flawless Vivid Blue diamonds in the world was the star on a record-breaking night.
Known simply as The Blue, the magnificent 13.22-carat pear cut gem was flanked, on either side, by a flawless 1-carat pear-cut white diamond. The ring sold for $23.8-million – more than $1.8-million per carat – setting a new world record for the price per carat for a blue diamond sold at auction.
The buyer was legendary New York jeweller Harry Winston Inc and the ring was renamed “The Winston Blue” after the auction.
Harry Winston Inc had itself been bought by The Swatch Group and, after the auction, its CEO Nayla Hayek said: “In January 2013 we purchased Harry Winston and since then my ambition has been to acquire the most desirable and unique gems. When Christie's announced they were offering the largest flawless fancy-vivid blue the GIA had ever graded, I had to buy it. Today, we are proud to own the most beautiful blue diamond in the world: The Winston Blue.”
