July’s birthstone is Ruby; its name derives from the Latin word “rubrum”, which means ‘red’. The gem is one of the four precious gemstones and is part of the corundum family (consisting of ruby and sapphire).
Most commonly, rubies range in shades from pinkish to blood-red - the colour is due to the trace amounts of the element chromium. The more chromium the deeper the colour red will appear, but the finest colour ruby in the trade is a deep red with a hint of purple, called “pigeon’s blood”.
HISTORY
There are ancient records from 200 BC that suggest that rubies were traded along the North Silk Road in China. The gem is mentioned four times in the Bible, stating that it was valued by royal families across the globe, worn by warriors for protection and added strength, and was credited with having profound healing properties.
Gaius Plinius Secundus better known as Pliny the Elder, a Roman scholar, described rubies in his book Natural History, which was written in the first century AD. By Medieval times (476 AD), traditions held that rubies symbolise good health, wisdom, wealth, and good luck in love. In 1960, the first laser was operated by shining a high-power flash lamp on a ruby rod with silver-coated surfaces.
