Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in the UK. This year, date of this celebration will fall on Sunday the 16th June 2024. Father’s Day is about honouring all of the special male role models in our lives, such as our fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, and father figures, for their role in the family.

Father’s Day History

In 1908, the first father’s day occurred when a West Virginian Church held a special sermon honouring fathers, after 362 men were killed in a mining accident. Red and white flowers were handed out to commemorate all the living fathers, and those fathers who had passed on.

In 1909, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd in West Virginia petitioned her local community and government to set up a national Father’s Day on the 5th of June, to honour her Civil War veteran father who had raised six children on his own after his wife died during childbirth.

In World War II (1939 – 1945), advertisers used the opportunity to use Father’s Day to promote the troops out on the field. By the time the war was over, Father’s Day was a national institution.

In 1972, Richard Nixon (the 37th President of the U.S.A) declared Father’s Day a national holiday when he signed it into law in the middle of his re-election campaign. This is the date that is still celebrated as Father's Day.

Association with Father’s Day

The colour associated with Father's Day is traditionally red. This vibrant hue symbolises love, strength, and courage - qualities often attributed to fathers who are seen as pillars of support within families.

The number three also holds special significance on Father's Day in the UK. As it falls on the third Sunday of June, this number represents unity among three generations: grandfather, father, and son / daughter. It signifies the bond that ties these generations together through shared experiences and values.
