“The idea of my life as a fairy tale is itself a fairy tale”
– Grace Kelly
If there was ever a hall of fame of engagement rings, Grace Kelly’s legendary $4 Million ring would no doubt be in it.
A renowned symbol of timeless elegance and style, the lovely Grace Kelly is best known for her roles in Rear Window, To Catch a Thief and The Country Girl where she embodied the essence of an icon. It is fitting that her famous engagement ring mirrored her timelessness and beauty.
As the story goes, Kelly met her husband to be, Prince Rainier III of Monaco, in the spring of 1955. When the prince heard of her attendance at the Cannes Film Festival, he cleverly organised a photo opportunity at his home as a way to meet her. Later that year, after many love letters, he visited her home town during Christmas and popped the question, however not with the ring you may have thought.
A lesser-known detail of their engagement is that Rainier first proposed with a diamond and ruby set eternity band - it is said that this band was made of family heirlooms and the colours were intended to pay tribute to his home.
It wasn’t until Kelly started filming High Society that her legendary ring entered the picture. The movie was going to be her last before she retired to Monaco to marry her love. When Rainier heard that the costume designer was looking for a fake ring for Kelly’s role, he offered to buy her a second engagement ring instead. The $4 Million, 10.48-carat emerald cut ring was flanked by two equally beautiful baguette cut side stones and set in a band of platinum, resulting in one of the most astounding pieces of jewellery many had ever seen.
