The Origin of Birthstones

Birthstones weren't always associated with the months of the year, they can be traced back to biblical times. In the book of Exodus (28: verse 21), it reads, "There were 12 stones, one for each of the names of the sons of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the name of one of the 12 tribes."

With time the stones became associated with the 12 astrological signs, and eventually the 12 months of the year. In 1912 the  American National Association of Jewelers made the official list of 12 birthstones.

WHAT IS APRIL’S BIRTHSTONE?

April is blessed with the most well known gem, the Diamond.

The word ‘diamond’ originates from the Greek word ‘adamas’ meaning unconquerable.

WHERE ARE DIAMONDS FOUND?

Diamonds date back billions of years, made of one element - carbon. Carbon atoms bond under immense heat and pressure below the Earth’s surface to create the diamonds’, due to this symmetrical atomic structure it is given its strength. Thought to have been brought to the surface after a violent volcanic eruption.

Many historical texts say that these precious jewels were created by lightning bolts, while others believe diamonds were the tears of the gods. There used to be a tradition of warriors wearing diamonds to give them strength, courage and “invincible” protection, before engaging in battle

Due to Diamonds having very good thermal conductivity that makes them feel cool to the touch they were believed to have magical healing powers and could cure illnesses. It was thought that diamonds held a certain purity, which enabled them to draw out poisonous toxins from the body.

In addition to being the April birthstone, diamond is the gift of choice for the 60th and 75th wedding anniversaries.
