Marilyn Monroe would have celebrated her 98th birthday on the 1st of June 2024. To commemorate her legacy we have put together a timeline of some of her most iconic moments as a woman of history.
Marilyn Monroe was born as Norma Jean Baker in Los Angeles, California, U.S. and passed on August 4th, 1962 in her home. This pop culture icon had an upbringing of note. Her mother was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and institutionalised in 1934. Therefore Monroe’s early childhood was between orphanages and a family friend, Grace Goddard.
Marilyn Monroe wed her high school sweetheart, James Dougherty, on June 19, 1942, in Los Angeles. The couple married just after her 16th birthday, possibly due to Monroe not wanting to go back to the orphanage after her mother was taken away for treatment in a mental hospital.

In 1950 was when Monroe first encountered Arthur Miller. At the time she was still trying to find fame, while he was already acclaimed as one of the country's leading playwrights, thanks to his Pulitzer Prize-winning Death of a Salesman. Monroe and Miller didn't meet again in person until 1955 after she'd moved to New York City to study at the Actors' Studio.
Miller and Monroe got married on June 29, 1956, in a judge's office in White Plains, New York; a Jewish ceremony followed on July 1, where Monroe was given away by her acting teacher, Lee Strasberg and converted to Judaism.
