The famous Sapphire Royal Engagement Ring currently owned by Catherine, Princess of Wales, was inspired by a diamond and sapphire brooch that Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha had created with Garrard for his future wife Queen Victoria in 1840. It is said that Queen Victoria loved the jewel so much that she wore it up until her husband’s death in 1861. According to Garrard’s current Creative Director, Sara Prentice, the brooch was a strong influence on Prince Charles when he went back to the British jeweller in 1981 to purchase a ring for Lady Diana, and ended up setting a sapphire cluster ring that resembled the brooch to give to her on their engagement.

This ring was then later given to Kate Middleton by Prince William on their engagement in 2010, as a way of making sure his mother was with him on his wedding day.
